Kevin Lowe had a busy offseason while he was still the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, pulling off some major trades he hopes will get the team back in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first two since 2006. And after he was done, Lowe kicked himself upstairs and brought in Steve Tambellini as the new GM. It's just one way things are changing - and changing quickly - under new Oilers owner Daryl Katz. Recent history says the Detroit Red Wings are unlikely to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Recent history also says they are unlikely to make it out of the first round of the playoffs. On paper, though, the Red Wings look as strong, perhaps stronger in some regards, to the team that proved to be the best in the NHL during both the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.
